Even In The Locker Room, Words Matter
the fight is not over
I feel a lot of stress about this election. The bulk of it is a fear that enough of the voting population will be manipulated by Homegrown Hitler to turn the tide. I’m not sure we could survive that as a country. I’m mostly sure we would, if nukes didn’t get involved. There would be riots, there would be deaths, millions would lose health insurance, and we might place hundreds of thousands of Muslim citizens in camps. I hope not, because all of that would be awful, but with the Donald, all of that is on the table.
I’ve been thinking about the future of the GOP in all this. Whether members want to admit it or not the party is in its death throes, at least in its current form. Even if Trump somehow wins, the writing is on the wall.
Bullshit you say? Isn’t Trump proof that we are stronger than ever? Individually, I’ll give it to you, you’re fired up. I do admire your passion. It’s just that your base is shrinking. It’s been shrinking. I don’t mean shrinking from a ideological level, because that is getting more virulent and extreme, but from a more literal standpoint. The percentage of the population which makes up the GOP base has shrunk with every presidential election for a while now. Google that shit.
I happen to believe the Republican Party can evolve with the times and become again a force for good, worthy of the name The Party Of Lincoln. I don’t know if that will happen in 4, 8, or even 16 years. I know it won’t happen in this election.
Just so you don’t think I’m making a joke about racial re-assignment surgery, I’m referring to current trends in the US population. Somewhere around 2040 white people will make up 49% of the voting population, dropping below a clear majority for the first time in our nation’s history.
That’s why I think Trump has risen to power in what has predominantly become a populist white political party: White Panic. Millions of descendants from a group who have controlled everything since 1776 are becoming a contributing member of it instead.
It’s like white people are the multi-generational owners of a family-run business that’s transitioning into an employee-owned company. The people who have had absolute power, the people who feel the business belongs to them because they started it, are inevitably going to have to share that power.
In short, as I see it, this country will finally and truly be of the people instead of one that favors a particular group of people. The thought of this is one of the few things keeping me from breaking down every time I see another hateful Trump supporter screaming. Even if Homegrown succeeds it will be a success like Hitler’s. He will gain power, but he will not have the capacity to rule without causing great suffering. His ego will prevent him from making decisions that benefit anyone other than himself. He will betray most of the poor and under-educated people who were the backbone of his movement.
Here is what I could say to those people today to help prevent a disaster. Even if Trump somehow brings manufacturing jobs back to the United States, automation is at an all-time high and only increasing. Look at the off-the-shelf technology we have now and compare it to a year ago.
Without specialized training or a college education, short of having yourself fused with an industrial robot there aren’t many jobs for you.
He cannot deliver on these promises because the jobs don’t exist and won’t magically manifest here. Don’t take this liberal’s word for it though. Ask farmers how many people it takes to plant or harvest crops today compared to a few decades ago. Ask auto manufacturers how many people need to work on a line to produce cars compared to ten or twenty years ago. There was a period in history where a white man with only a high school education could count on a good job and a respectable retirement. That time is long gone and it’s not coming back. I mean fast food restaurants have already begun to replace humans with robots.
I’m not an idiot. I know Trump supporters aren’t listening to me or anyone else this year. If you want to vote for Trump after all that he’s done there’s no way anyone can get through to you. So I’m talking to the you who will vote as a minority with me in 2040. That you who will have white children who will need health insurance and an education to have anything resembling a better life than you’re living now. If you hold onto this fantasy of superiority or inherent rights as whites to a prosperous future you will miss out on the opportunity to be a part of what is inevitably coming next.
The white world is shrinking and not even Trump can make history stop being history.
We are already a beautiful, multicultural nation, a grand experiment that has a lot of work to do, but just as much to be proud of. I for one want white guys to have a place at the table. I don’t want to be ashamed of what we become, be an exile with the angry hill people. Most importantly I want African-Americans and Muslims to feel safe in their own country. I want women to earn an equal living.

We should continue to fight injustice, but we have to fight the hate inside ourselves too
